Tattoos and Body Piercings |
If you were able to make it through the 80s and 90s without getting some sort of tattoo and piercing, then you were one of the few who did. Now people are wondering if the “fad” of body art such as tattoos and piercings are passé. Well, the answer to that is yes, and no. Yes, the days of the large bone nose rings, and the bodies that are covered with at least 30 tattoos on them are probably gone, but tattoo and piercings are here to stay. They just come in different forms now.
People’s perception of what a tattoo or piercing should look like has changed dramatically in the last 10 years, but it doesn’t mean it is any less popular. Adding a tattoo or a piercing to a part of your body is still a way to have the ultimate control over your body, and that is what draws people to it. Now though, instead of having large, public tattoos and piercings, people are opting for a more reserved tattoo in more of a private area which isn’t necessarily on public display 24 hours a day.
What is “in” now are tattoos that have personal meaning to them, and designs that are based on history or something specific to the person who is getting them. Body piercing is used as a way to show off a person’s rebellious nature, or their need to be unique. They are no longer being used as a way to be so different that other people cross the street to get away from them.
Tattoos used to be associated with sailors or bikers in the early years of body art. Then in the mid-20th century tattoos became more for the young, single man who was typically a blue collar type personality. In the late 20th century, it became popular with almost everyone. It didn’t matter whether they were young, old, male, female – everyone was getting one. That part hasn’t really changed, but the way body art is perceived definitely has.
Women are famous for getting tattoos on their lower back which makes them feel sexy and desired by men. Men are getting tattoos to show off their masculine side and to feel like they have something that will always be constant in their life. More and more, people are choosing historical symbols, ethnic artwork, and other signs that have meaning and show off who they really are, as opposed to how they think they should be.
So, in answer to the original question, having a tattoo and piercing is never going to lose its attractiveness to most people. They are considered artwork more than anything, and they are part of who a person is. Everyone wants to show a little personality and having a tattoo and piercing is definitely the way to do it. |
